Who Is Eligible?

All full-time undergraduate students are required to have health insurance and are automatically enrolled in the major medical portion of Ashland University’s insurance.

Dependents

Insured Students who are enrolled in the Student Health Plan may also enroll their eligible dependents. Dependent coverage will be handled at the school. Students can contact: Coral Howman at 419-289-5019 chowman1@ashland.edu.

Waiving Coverage

Students have the option to waive Ashland University’s coverage if they are currently covered by an individual or family coverage plan. When deciding whether to opt-in or opt-out of the Student Health Insurance Plan, Ashland University strongly recommends that students review their health insurance policies to ensure that their coverage provides equal or better benefits and that they are covered in the Ashland, OH area.

Students are given one opportunity to waive coverage for the academic year at the beginning of the fall semester, with the exception of spring waivers for students newly admitted for spring term, and students returning from a leave of absence or study abroad program for the spring semester.

Students aged 18 and under have access to dental and vision benefits up to the last day of the month in which you turn 19.

Included in the Wellfleet medical coverage is a $10,000 AD&D benefit in the event of death or dismemberment.

24 Hour Nurseline

Students who enroll and maintain medical coverage in this insurance plan have access to 24 Hour Nurseline. Calls are answered 24/7/365 by a registered nurse to answer health questions and assist in determining the appropriate level of care for an injury or sickness. Call 800-634-7629.

CareConnect 24/7 Behavioral Health & Nurseline

CareConnect offers students access to licensed behavioral health clinicians 24/7/365 at 888-857-5462.

Emergency Medical & Travel Assistance

Wellfleet Student provides access to emergency medical and travel assistance, reparation, and other travel assistance services when traveling. For general inquiries regarding the travel access assistance services coverage, call Wellfleet Student at 877-657-5030.

Is the student health insurance comprehensive i.e., includes hospitalization if needed?

Yes, the plan offered is ACA compliant and covers all Essential Health Benefits. It is rated as a Platinum level plan for those familiar with metal levels for ACA plans.

Does the student health insurance include dental coverage?

The Ashland University Student Health Insurance Plan offers pediatric dental benefits. Please refer to the Wellfleet Certificate for additional information on this coverage.

What is the coverage period?

The plan runs for 12 months (the full academic year, 8/12/2023 – 8/11/2024) if you meet the eligibility requirements.

Does the student health insurance cover student medical expenses off campus or when traveling (e.g., to home state)?

Yes, the Ashland University Student Health Insurance Plan uses the Cigna PPO network which is recognized nationally. As always, please confirm with the provider that they are in-network before services are rendered.

What happens if I lose my own or my parent’s coverage mid-semester? Can I join the Ashland University Student Health Insurance Plan?

You may be eligible to join the plan mid-semester if you experience a Qualifying Life Event (QLE,) such as loss of coverage. Please contact Malinda Townsend at Malinda.Townsend@usi.com for more information should you experience a QLE.
