Reed College

Who Is Eligible?

Undergraduate Students

All undergraduate students are required to carry medical insurance. You will be automatically covered under the student health insurance plan, and the premiums will be charged to your account, unless you waive coverage and show proof of comparable coverage with another plan. Reed College has set the waiver criteria to ensure all students have adequate access to care while attending school. All students who wish to opt-out of the Reed College Student Health Insurance must do so by the fall waiver deadline. Additionally, any newly admitted students in the spring who wish to opt-out will need to waive coverage by the spring deadline.

To waive coverage, visit waive.pacificsource.com/reed by September 3, 2024 (Fall) and January 27, 2025 (Spring).

Waiver Requirements

  • Your plan provides access to health care providers in the Portland area for emergency and non-emergency conditions. Note: Plans that provide benefits only for emergency and/or urgent care do not satisfy this criteria. Likewise, if you have an HMO and the Portland area is out-of-network, your coverage doesn’t meet this criteria. If your HMO offers guest privileges in the Portland area, you can potentially meet this criteria by obtaining guest privileges. You must contact your insurer to receive guest privileges prior to waiving coverage.
  • The plan is currently active, and you agree to maintain health insurance coverage throughout the entire academic year.
  • Your health insurance plan is ACA-compliant (short-term medical plans are not ACA-compliant).
  • The Plan covers inpatient and outpatient Mental Health Care within the Portland Area (emergency only coverage does not satisfy this requirement).

Primary Care vs Urgent Care vs Emergency Room Video

Is the student health insurance comprehensive, i.e., includes hospitalization if needed?

Yes, the plan offered is ACA compliant and covers all Essential Health Benefits. It is rated as a Gold level plan for those familiar with metal levels for ACA plans.

Am I eligible for the student health insurance plan?

All undergraduate students are eligible and required to carry medical insurance. Graduate students (MALS) are also eligible for coverage.

What is the coverage period?

The plan runs for 12 months (the full academic year 8/15/2024 – 8/14/2025) if you meet the eligibility requirements. However, if you are an undergraduate student newly admitted for the spring, your coverage will run from 1/1/2025 – 8/14/2025.

If I have my own coverage that meets the waiver requirements, how often do I need to submit a waiver application?

Reed College requires a completed waiver at the beginning of each academic year (in the fall). If you are a newly admitted student for the spring, you will be required to submit a waiver at this time.

What is in-network in the Portland area in case I need hospital services or urgent care?

The current options include, but are not limited to: Legacy Health, Legacy Health Partners, The Portland Clinic, and OHSU. Urgent Cares, such as ZoomCare and Legacy Go Health are in-network. However, contracts can frequently change, and we highly recommended you always confirm with the provider close to the date of service that they are in-network. To help with this process, you can use the Find a Doctor tool on PacificSource’s website and search by entering your zip code to narrow the results for your preferred area.

Does the student health insurance cover student medical expenses off campus when traveling, or back in a home state?

Yes, the student health insurance covers medical expenses while off campus, when travelling, and when in a home state.

  • The network while in OR, WA, ID & MT is Navigator.
  • The network outside of these 4 states is Aetna.
  • Student health insurance also covers students at the in-network level while abroad.
  • A useful tool is Find a Doctor/Drug located on the PacificSource Reed College home page. You can search for an in-network provider based on your location, just enter a zip code. Always remember to confirm with the provider and the physician that they are both in the applicable network to avoid out-of-network costs.

What happens if my waiver application is denied?

All students are required to carry medical insurance that includes comprehensive access to care in the Portland metro area. If your waiver application is denied for not meeting the Reed College requirements, you will be required to take the Reed College Student Health Insurance. Should you choose to appeal a denied waiver, please follow the instructions provided on your denied waiver email from PacificSource.

What happens if I lose my own or my parent’s coverage mid semester? Can I join the Reed College Student Health Insurance Plan?

You may be eligible to join the plan mid-semester if you experience a Qualifying Life Event (QLE) such as loss of coverage. Please contact USI Student Health Inquiries at StudentHealthInquiries@usi.com for more information if you experience a QLE.
