Who Is Eligible?

All Students

All full-time Manhattan School of Music students are required to have health insurance that meets the minimum essential coverage requirements set by the U.S. Affordable Care Act. All full-time Manhattan School of Music students will be pre-enrolled in the plan and charged via their student bill.

The MSM Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) is mandatory for all F-1 visa holders. International health insurance plans are not accepted. Students enrolled at MSM through our partnership exchange program are also mandated to enroll on the MSM-sponsored plan. Exemptions: Enrollment is voluntary for DMA students in their 3rd year and beyond.

Dependents

Dependent coverage is only available for international students with J-1 status.

Waiving Coverage

To be eligible to waive the MSM-sponsored Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) your individual/private plan:

  • Must be valid in New York State
  • Must be effective no later than August 20 (For full-time students enrolled for Fall–Spring 2025-26 academic year, 1 full year of coverage is required August 20, 2025–August 19, 2026. For students graduating in the Fall, coverage is required through December 31.)
  • New York State Medicaid will be accepted as long as dates of coverage match requirements above

Students age 18 and under have access to dental and vision benefits up to the last day of the month in which you turn 19.

HealthiestYou: 24/7 Doctor Access

Starting on the effective date of your coverage under the student insurance plan, you have 24/7 access to medical advice through HealthiestYou, a national telehealth service.* By visiting telehealth4students.com, you have access to board-certified physicians via phone and/or video, where permitted. This service is especially helpful for minor illnesses, such as allergies, sore throat, earache, pink eye, etc. Based on the condition being treated, the doctor can also prescribe certain medications, saving you a trip to the doctor’s office. Using HealthiestYou can save you money and time, while avoiding costly trips to a doctor’s office, urgent care facility, or emergency room. As a Member with Student Resources, there is no consultation fee for this service.* Every call with a HealthiestYou doctor is covered 100% during your policy period. HealthiestYou is not health insurance. HealthiestYou is designed to complement, and not replace, the care you receive from your primary care physician. HealthiestYou physicians are an independent network of doctors who advise, diagnose, and prescribe at their own discretion. HealthiestYou physicians provide cross coverage and operate subject to state regulations. Physicians in the independent network do not prescribe DEA controlled substances, non-therapeutic drugs and certain other drugs which may be harmful because of their potential for abuse. HealthiestYou does not guarantee that a prescription will be written. Services may vary by state.

HealthiestYou: Virtual Counselor Access

Starting on the effective date of your coverage under the student insurance plan, you have access to mental health providers through a national virtual counseling service.* Psychiatrists, psychologists, and licensed therapists are available to you through a variety of communication methods, including phone and video.

When you sign up, you’ll complete a questionnaire, choose your provider, and select a date and time for your appointment. Appointments are available 7 days a week. Visits are secure, discreet, and confidential, and you have ongoing support with the same provider.

As a Member with Student Resources, there is no consultation fee for this service. Every communication with a provider is covered 100% during your policy period.

24/7 Student Support

Members have immediate access to the Student Assistance Program, a service that coordinates counseling services offered by Master’s Licensed Clinicians who can provide Members with someone to talk to when everyday issues become overwhelming. Is the student health insurance comprehensive i.e., includes hospitalization if needed?

Yes, the plan offered is ACA compliant and covers all Essential Health Benefits. It is rated as a Silver level plan for those familiar with metal levels for ACA plans.

Does the student health insurance include dental coverage?

The MSM Student Health Insurance Plan offers pediatric dental benefits. Please refer to the UHCSR Certificate for additional information on this coverage.

What is the coverage period?

The plan runs for 12 months (the full academic year, 8/20/2025 – 8/19/2026) if you meet the eligibility requirements.

Does the student health insurance cover student medical expenses off campus or when traveling (e.g., to home state)?

Yes, the MSM Student Health Insurance Plan uses the UHC PPO network which is recognized nationally. As always, please confirm with the provider that they are in-network before services are rendered.

What happens if I lose my own or my parent’s coverage mid-semester? Can I join the Manhattan School of Music Student Health Insurance Plan?

You may be eligible to join the plan mid-semester if you experience a Qualifying Life Event (QLE,) such as loss of coverage. Please contact Malinda Townsend at malinda.townsend@usi.com for more information should you experience a QLE.
