It is a requirement that all students (undergraduates who are registered for 6 or more credits and graduate students who are registered for 4.5 or more credits) have health insurance coverage. The Cooper Union provides health insurance for all students through our health insurance company, Wellfleet.
Insured Students who are enrolled in the Student Health Plan may also enroll their eligible Dependents.
Students who are covered under their own or their parent’s insurance policy may choose to waive the student health insurance plan. Please be advised that if you wish to waive the insurance coverage, the insurance you provide must be currently active and will be subject to coverage eligibility verification through the health insurance company. Please check your cooper.edu email and follow the instructions from the health insurance company for the health insurance waiver process.

Included in the Wellfleet medical coverage is a $10,000 AD&D benefit in the event of death or dismemberment.

Students who enroll and maintain medical coverage in this insurance plan have access to 24 Hour Nurseline. Calls are answered 24/7/365 by a registered nurse to answer health questions and assist in determining the appropriate level of care for an injury or sickness. Call 800-634-7629.
CareConnect offers students access to licensed behavioral health clinicians 24/7/365 at 888-857-5462.
Wellfleet Student provides access to emergency medical and travel assistance, reparation, and other travel assistance services when traveling. For general inquiries regarding the travel access assistance services coverage, call Wellfleet Student at 877-657-5030.

Is the student health insurance comprehensive i.e., includes hospitalization if needed?
Yes, the plan offered is ACA compliant and covers all Essential Health Benefits. It is rated as a Platinum level plan for those familiar with metal levels for ACA plans.
Does the student health insurance include dental coverage?
The Cooper Union Student Health Insurance Plan has pediatric dental benefits. Please refer to the Wellfleet Certificate for additional information on this coverage.
What is the coverage period?
The plan runs for 12 months (the full academic year, 8/15/2025 – 8/14/2026) if you meet the eligibility requirements.
Does the student health insurance cover student medical expenses off campus or when traveling (e.g., to home state)?
Yes, The Cooper Union Student Health Insurance Plan uses the Cigna PPO network which is recognized nationally. As always, please confirm with the provider that they are in-network before services are rendered.
What happens if I lose my own or my parent’s coverage mid-semester? Can I join The Cooper Union Student Health Insurance Plan?
You may be eligible to join the plan mid-semester if you experience a Qualifying Life Event (QLE,) such as loss of coverage. Please contact Malinda Townsend at malinda.townsend@usi.com for more information should you experience a QLE.
